Sunshine for those of us who are reminded, in the most brutal way, that we are connected. is the third and final performance in The Sunshine Lecture Series – a trilogy of public lectures that follow donna kukama's long-term series of performances under the title the history book for those who absolutely need to be remembered. The work begins with the notion of writing as an embodied practice, where to write-in-time is to remember the breaths of ancestors and spirits, oceans and other water bodies, lands, plants, sunshine, and ..., and (?), and (...) as active participants in the writing of history. The lecture playfully interconnects dreams, personal memories, excerpts from children's books and onsite research through an alchemic transformation of everyday objects. It leans on certain aspects of what sparked the birth of the Dada movement at Cabaret Voltaire, as an anchor for reflecting on the current political climate. This process of summoning sunshine nurtures multiple resistances and gives birth to ways of existing beyond prevailing forms of oppression, apartheid, and coloniality.
